I was recently contacted by Joanna Penn, the author of the weblog, The Creative Penn. She had noticed Juiced on Writing from Stumble Upon, and has since become a twitter friend.

I’d like to give you a quick rundown on what is offered at Joanna’s website and on signup.

The Creative Penn

Joanna provides in her website, numerous resources for the writer, particularly based around marketing, self-publishing and print-on-demand. The website also sports a good range of interviews with published authors towards their own experiences.

There are a lot of articles provided on various publishing topics, several commercial e-books authored or co-authored by Joanna – including one on writing, and various other resources available as you browse through the site.

Joanna is passionate about writing and publishing, and you can see this in the latest blog posts. This week is Read An Ebook Week also, and in order to propagate some more e-book reading, what better way than to suggest you sign up to Joanna’s site to receive her free e-book (details below) also?

First Time Author Workbook

On signing up at The Creative Penn, you receive access to the free 27 page workbook, First Time Author. Although simplistic in nature, this e-book is not simple by any means.

The e-book first takes the wanna-be author through some motivation and productivity factors in Parts 1 and 2. Part 1 provides a series of questions to survey the motivation behind the reader wanting to write. And then as a natural progression, once we’ve worked out why we have a binding need to write, we are lead through some goal planning and into Part 2 on actually deciding what we will write about, and structuring our book.

In Part 3 we are introduced to some general thoughts towards publication, and led into finding further details in another more detailed e-book written by Joanna Penn entitled From Idea to Book. A further five pages introduce other e-books available for the new author, and a list of resources in an appendix.

As a free e-book, leading to the potential purchase of another (or perhaps three others) to build on the information, I found First Time Author quite conductive and informational in itself. Built as a series of survey questions, I found browsing through the questions triggered some more desires within me to get up and write. It was a good reminder of always keeping one finger on the pulse of why I want to be a writer – what motivates me, and what commitments (time and otherwise) I need to offer to make the dream come true. This is something which this small e-book does well in simply providing those questions in a workbook style.

I will also be interested to see when Joanna’s commercial e-books – particularly the one on marketing in the Web 2.0 environment – come out. For the new author considering writing a book, The Creative Penn website and First Time Author e-book are well worth checking out.

For those who missed Tom Evan’s comment here at Juiced on Writing, he has just released a free e-book on Writer’s Block. WordLube is available via myebook.com, and this is a free multi-media web environment which allows you to create interactive ebooks, using text, audio, images, allowing for user comments, and subscriptions.

Tom was the first person I know of who discovered myebook.com, and has also used it to build a community for his Unleash the Book Inside You course. His blog post over myebook.com is well worth a read, featured also on the blog for Fuel My Blog late last week.

What’s in WordLube?

You know what? I’m not going to tell you. It’s free to access – although the myebook.com format only allows for in-browser viewing so you can’t take a copy for yourself. Tom has included 5 days worth of exercises to clear your writer’s block, and several mindmaps to help you visualise the mindset. There is even an embedded youtube video on Tony Buzan, and one of Tom’s beautiful mediative audio guides.

If the contents of this free gift for writers is enough to tempt you, take a look at the Bookwright’s Unleash The Book Inside You Home Study Course also.

Jamie Grove, on the How Not to Write blog, is giving away 30 NaNoWriMo halos to NaNo participants. Fill in the form on his blog to participate in the draw. The halos are given to those NaNo participants who donate for the NaNo event. That money supports the event itself, and young writers.

Unfortunately, as Jamie discovered, some of us can’t afford to donate the voluntary $10 even if the cause and event are appreciated. No halos for us then, we are tainted with the recessionary devil horns, perhaps. I am in that boat, but won’t fill in the form on Jamie’s blog, leaving others to take hold of Jamie’s copious generosity. I’m currently donating my last half-month’s salary (yep, it’s £10) to supporting an African chicken purchase for a promise made on Blog Action Day which was held last week. It’s almost worth the vintage joke – which comes first, the chicken or the NaNo?

The How Not to Write blog is well worth a bookmark. I particularly like Jamie’s post “Twelve Step Program for NaNoWriMo Acceptance” in which his little devil voice sounds just like mine did when contemplating whether or not to enter myself into the NaNo this year.

As Jamie and I appear to share a similar sense of humour, I’ll be buddying up with him on NaNo once I can get there (the server is currently down, it appears). In a world full of serious writing blogs, freelance writing blogs, copywriting blogs, internet marketing blogs, editors and preditors warnings and the like, the How Not to Write blog is a fabulous find, with both some serious topics, dished out with some humourous seasonings also. (There, I’ve well and truly done my dash with mixed metaphors today).

And for those who missed the item in my last Free Ebooks for Writers post, here’s the link to Lazette Gifford’s NaNo for the New and Insane free ebook explaining your way into NaNo also.

She is doing daily draws, and I have hope for having my name drawn to perhaps have the cost of the HTTS course refunded in one of her bigger draws, but blogging about this will decrease my odds, I know. For more details – go to her blog to read.

In the meantime, anyone following her gets a Free Clinic – these are large and extremely good PDF courses on things like Character, Plot, Scenes etc. We are currently voting to see which one will be given away.

If you don’t want to follow Holly (for some strange reason) but want one of these Clinics – I happen to already own them all. So my free one can be gifted to you! And yes, Holly says it’s okay to do so.

All you need to do is comment on this post, asking for this Free HL Clinic PDF when Holly gives them out, and if I have a lot of response, I’ll make a random draw for it.

Links: Holly Lisle blogs about her Birthday gifts

P.S. I’ve finally got around to registering to become an affiliate for Holly’s products from her shop. But the above link is not to any affiliated product. I simply believe that Holly’s products are tremendous (without being a slavering fan or stalker, I hope).

Original Post (October 2008)

Looking around the web, I’ve lately found 36 free ebooks to download for writers. These do not include the seemingly hundreds of free ebooks and articles available on writing or producing eBooks to sell, as I’ve tried to concentrate on creative or other online writing guides. Links are current at this point in time. Let me know if there are any more.

In no particular order -

1. Mugging the Muse by Holly Lisle.
This 209 page eBook incorporates many of the articles and workshops from Holly Lisle’s main writing site, with additional material. It is now available as a free download both in PDF and Exe ebook versions. This is one of my favourites, I must add.

2. The Non-Celebrity’s Guide to Getting a Children’s Book Published
This free eBook is avilable from Write4Kids.com, along with a couple of others.

3. Unleashing the Idea Virus by Seth Godin
Okay, not strictly about writing, but Seth Godin’s publications are some of my all time favourites because they are applicable to any writer’s lifestyle, marketing and creativity. And most are given away quite freely, so take a look around his site. Unleashing the Idea Virus is about word-of-mouth marketing.

4. Assaulting a Writer’s Thinking by Lea Schizas
This eBook is available via Free-ebooks.net, once you’ve registered. In fact, there are 44 results under the Writing and Publishing category at Free-ebooks. However this one has a good rating and is on a general writing subject, whilst most others are more towards ezines and eBooks.

5. Book Writing for Fun and Profit by Brian Scott
From the Bookcatcher site, this 84 page eBook in PDF format contains some information, some advertisements, and some resource links.

6. Improve Your Writing Skills
This is a little Exe eBook downloadable from Mantex.co.uk. It includes some simple grammar discussions, plus chapters on writing strategies, writers block and resources. Although dated 2002, the eBook itself is a good representation of putting together an exe eBook with a good format, working links to pages, and small relevant advertising to the side.

7. Legendfire’s Writers Guide V2
The Legendfires online creative writing community has published version 2 of its writing guide in March 2008, which provides discussion around goals and starters for writing. This 54 page PDF guide is well worth downloading if you are into creative writing.

8. On Creative Writing by Linda A Lavid.
This ebook is found on the Legendfire website also, and comes in 48 pages PDF format.

9. and 10. Blogbash and Blogging for Profits
Both of these ebooks are free to download, on the specific subjects of blogging. Blogbash came about after an event on the Chitika blog and interviews 30 successful bloggers. Blogging for Profits is written by Yaro Starak who runs the successful Blog Mastermind ecourses. Both give some excellent principles for writing for the blog platform. Both are free.

11. Manage Your Writing by Kenneth W. Davis
This is a free download via the Scribd website, where you will find other writing themed books as photocopies / scans or uploaded PDFs or text files from some authors. This eBook concentrates on Business Writing.

The Oxford Essential Guide to English, a scanned edition is also currently available from Scribd, as are other dictionaries and references.

12. Creative Freelancing
A free ebook available from writingcareer.com.

13. Make Your Words Sell
This large and free ebook by SiteSell.com’s Ken Evoy with Joe Robson. At 250 pages, it’s an excellent reference for copywriters, or making your words work on the internet. While you’re there, check out the other free large ebooks in PDF format – Make Your Content Presell, and Make Your Knowledge Sell (the last being on information products or eBooks).

14. How to Write a Great Query Letter by Noah Lukeman
This ebook is relatively famous out there on the internet, and has been given back as a gift to the writing community by the author. On the same page you will now also find the free download eBook, How to Land a Literary Agent. The How to Write a Great Query Letter is available only via a free download at amazon.com however. Which means there is a difficulty from my own perspective as I’m a UK amazon customer, and the U.S. Amazon places restrictions based on geography on digital downloads.

15. Writing Success Secrets by Shaun Fawcett
A general eBook of 89 pages on everyday writing – letter writing or writing essays or papers.

16, 17 and 18. Tropes and Schemes, Begin Writing Fiction and Dangers for Fiction Writers
These three short eBooks (around 35 pages each) by Shruti Chandra Gupta are available as free downloads at the LiteraryZone blog. These are a compilation of the content on the website, where you can continue to read this content if you don’t want to download the eBooks.

19 – 24. Paperback Writer’s free Ebooks
Available at Scribd.com, Lynn Viehl, the Paperback Writer has made available several for writers including The Novel Handbook, John and Marcia, the Novel Crash Test Dummies – I and II, Left Behind and Loving It 2007 Virtual Writing Workshop, and the Devil’s Publishing Dictionary.

25. Writing a Novel Using the Snowflake Method by Randy Ingermanson.
This PDF is available via Scribd also, as an introduction to the snowflake method in plotting a novel.

26. Active Author Guides to Copyright
The Research Copyright website has a couple of free ebooks to download introducing copyright issues for authors.

The ZaidLearn blogsite is giving away a free PDF directory for free e-learning ebooks, directed at the Net Generation (as against the Next Generation) of online learners.

Zaid Ali Alsagoff has published this ebook via the Open Source Books section of the Internet Archive, where you can view the PDF online, or download it. This is a 46MB ebook, full of graphics, so pay attention to your timing on this one, as I struck peak hours on the internet and had a very slow download.

The eBook has also been published via a Slideshare version, and SlideBoom version. The Boom version is available to view onsite at Zaidlearn.

The 60 Page “Amazing Free e-Learning eBooks Collection” features one page per book, with a brief description of the contents of the ebook, a link and covershot”. Zaid has amalgamated an absolutely awesome collection of ebooks which are free to download, and provide a lot of information about e-learning, appropriate to not only educators but anyone interested in providing e-courses and e-content to a virtual audience.

The last twenty pages of this directory does not provide more links to actual ebook downloads, but helpful tips on methods to find our own resources (the first being the expected google search) and links to searchable sites. Zaid also advertises his free ebook inside, which features 69 Learning Adventures in 6 Galaxies. He also have two other learning ebooks coming out soon.

Zaid also provides all of the ebooks and links as a quick link list on his blog, giving readers permission to replicate this list here. As a wonderful marketing device, I would suggest that you do go and get this ebook from Zaid’s site itself (the links are below) to share in the fun cartoons and graphics, and details towards what each ebook contains before you select from the many available. Go and get it (or watch it onsite) at ZaidLearn now.
