The Trouble with Search Terms

Writing Links

I love writing, and improving my own productivity as a writer. Tools, software, techniques, the internet…great stuff.

But honestly – to keep up to date with writing from the management side of it, takes a lot of research. The way I research, using tools such as Google Alerts or Search feeds has been documented in my article, Writing Seriously – Or Not.

But there is an irony around this when dealing with a blog on writing. You see, there are many fantastic blogs about writing out there. And it’s becoming quite difficult to find them. That’s because I automatically stick in the search term, “Writing Blogs” into google, Yahoo or MSN or the Twitter search or where-ever.

And what comes up? Those excellent blogs with a focus on writing, fiction, non-fiction, freelancing or otherwise?

No.

But I do have a lot of links to blogs telling me how to write a blog.

“Writing Blogs” seems to be their primary search key phrase. I’d like to suggest that the niche may well be saturated by now, but there is a lot of excellent information out there for those new to blogging.

So, here’s a few of my own favourites within the How to Write a Blog niche -

  • Yaro Starak’s Entrepreneur’s Journey - he’s into internet businesses in total, but there are many helpful tips and articles going back a few years on here, including lots on podcasting. And he runs a forum for readers also.
  • Caroline Middlebrook’s Blog – Caroline has a free and excellent guide to using WordPress, and currently has a popup signup once you go to her site (sorry, but I hate those things, but in this case…). If you sign up to her free newsletter, the Blogger’s Bible, you will receive a lot of excellent information in setting up your first WordPress blog.
  • Danny Rowse’s famous ProBlogger – this continues to be a must read, even if you’re not thinking about creating a blog to make money from.

The search term “Writing Blogs” also brings up many top copywriting-orientated blogs. Here are a couple of my own favourites in that niche -

All of the above could be deemed non-surprising in many blogging circles, but for the new blogger out there, I would recommend you take a look at them. All five don’t only deal with blogging as a topic, most also have a lot of information on the newest forms of marketing, or social networking.
