Another five links to interesting stories out there from the writing world. Just because…they give pause.
Link 1 : Noble Literature Boss Snubs U.S. Writers
Via Writer’s Write blog initially, comes the news that the Noble Academy’s secretary, Horace Engdahl thinks -
“The U.S. is too isolated, too insular. They don’t translate enough and don’t really participate in the big dialogue of literature,” Engdahl said. “That ignorance is restraining.”
Of course, all Americans are up in arms towards this.
But then you get this -
Link 2 : Philip Pullman’s Book Banned Across America
Again, via Writer’s Write blog initially, we find that Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series debut novel, Northern Lights (published as The Golden Compass in the U.S.) was the fourth most challenged book in 2007 across American schools and libraries, due to some American’s perceptions of the religious content.
But then again, you get this -
Link 3 : UK Not Publishing Muslim Book, US Is
With British publishers pulling out of immediately publishing Sherry Jone’s The Jewel of Medina due to a firebomb attack on their offices, U.S. publishing firm is speeding up their efforts to publish this book.
Link 4 : Holly Lisle’s Twitter Birthday Giveaway
If you’ve read this Juiced on Writing blog you will know I am currently undergoing the How to Think Sideways writing course of Holly Lisle, but you may not have picked up on the totally free giveaway to celebrate her birthday this month. Check out Holly’s store for all the goodies you may have a chance to get your hands on.
Holly joined twitter on 29th September, and three days later she had produced an excellent giveaway promotion to gain more followers on it. Holly is currently giving away her ebooks and writing courses, gifting from $3000 – $5000 worth of merchandise. How do you enter?
Follow her on Twitter. That’s it. And if you’re there, you could follow me too!
PS: Holly’s next round of How to Think Sideways opens it’s doors for registration for one week only, starting today (that one was an affiliate link).
Link 5: Martha Stewart Does Blogging
I posted this YouTube video up onto my Writing Tumblr blog this morning, and will share the link to that here. Martha Stewart dedicated an entire show to blogging. Her blog(s) use WordPress, and in the excerpt of the show posted onto YouTube, Martha has a quick talk with her magazine editors and also with Maria Alexandra Vettese and Stephanie Congdon Barnes of A Year of Mornings.
A Year of Mornings is now a published (picture) book but was originally a concept where two bloggers states apart posted up a picture from their environment onto the same blog each morning. Not only is this one of the many examples of blogs becoming published books (a huge trend in Japan also) but is a concept I’d personally like to pursue in a project both in writing and blogging. Perhaps with somebody even further apart, such as the antipodeans, for instance.
